About Our Parish
Our Lady of Assumption Church, Pragasapuram
A historic Roman Catholic parish of the Diocese of Tuticorin, offering spiritual care to the people of God in Pragasapuram since 1880.
Parish Overview
Our Lady of Assumption Parish, Pragasapuram, is a Roman Catholic parish of the Diocese of Tuticorin, in the Thoothukudi District of Tamil Nadu. Long before it was formally established in 1880, the people of this village worshipped in a simple thatched chapel โ a humble beginning that, over time, grew into the parish we know today. The parish now comprises the main church and seven substations in the surrounding villages.
Our Mission
We are called to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ in word and in deed: to celebrate the sacraments with devotion and reverence, to serve the poor and the marginalised, and to form the young in faith and in the spiritual life.
Our Vision
We stand as a parish deeply rooted in Marian devotion, dedicated to evangelisation and works of charity. We strive to strengthen parish families in their devotion to God, to see the young take an active part in parish life, and to help all our people grow in the spiritual life and in holiness. We labour so that this parish of Pragasapuram may be filled with the light of the Gospel and stand as one community.
Church Architecture
The present church, consecrated in 1967, is a graceful sanctuary. At its heart stands a beautiful high altar dedicated to Our Lady of Assumption. Above and behind the altar rises the Cross of the Suffering Christ, while on either side Our Lady of Heaven and St. Joseph are enthroned in splendour. Within, stained-glass windows portray the disciples of Jesus, completing a church of quiet beauty.
