About Our Parish

Our Lady of AssumptionChurch, Pragasapuram

A living community of faith in the Diocese of Tuticorin since 1880.

Parish Overview

Our Lady of Assumption Parish, Pragasapuram, is located in the Thoothukudi District of Tamil Nadu, India. The parish was formally established in 1880, though Catholic settlers had been living in this coastal village for many years before that. Today, the parish encompasses the main church and eight substations spread across the surrounding villages.

Our Mission

We are called to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ in word and deed โ€” to celebrate the sacraments with reverence, to serve the poor and marginalised, to educate the young in faith and knowledge, and to build a community where every person is welcomed as a child of God.

Our Vision

A parish deeply rooted in Marian devotion, active in social outreach, and growing in holiness โ€” where families are strengthened, youth are inspired, and the elderly are cherished. We envision a community that transforms the village of Pragasapuram through the light of the Gospel.

Church Architecture

The present church building, dedicated in 1967, features a classic Latin cross plan with a soaring nave, side aisles, and a prominent bell tower. The interior is adorned with stained glass representations of the Mysteries of the Rosary and a beautiful main altar dedicated to Our Lady of Assumption.
