Education

Our Institutions

Four schools serve the parish under the parish priest's administration β€” one middle school and three primary schools β€” educating the children of Pragasapuram and its substations.

Middle School

St. Mary's Middle School

🏫

Started in 1929 on the northern side of the old church as a primary school for Classes 1 to 5. Its first headmaster was Mr. Mariyasingha Thevar. The school advanced greatly under Fr. Santhana Mariyan, during whose time it was raised to a middle school covering Classes 1 to 8, with Mr. Mariyabakkiya Thevar as headmaster. Later, under Fr. Mel Swamy, children joined from the Karunai Illam orphanage run by the Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows. Sr. Kasmir Kumari was the first sister to serve as its headmistress. In 1991 the foundation stone for a new school building within the parish house compound was laid by Bishop S.T. Amalanathar.

Achievements

Two first-place shields at the Nazareth sports competitions of 1944 and 1952, and first prize with its shield at the Nazareth science exhibition, won through the efforts of teacher A. Deva Aseervatham.
